How to use this letter tracing maker

Choose what to trace: uppercase, lowercase, letter pairs (Aa, Bb) or your own words. Pick a range of letters, for example A to H for one week and I to P the next, so each sheet stays short and focused.

Each row starts with a solid letter to copy, followed by dotted letters to trace. Tick Add a blank line after each row to give children space to write the letter on their own, which is the step that really builds memory.

Understanding the lines

The guide lines match what children see at school. Tall letters and capitals touch the top line. Small letters like a, c and o fit between the dashed middle line and the baseline. Letters with tails, like g, p and y, drop down to the faint bottom line. Point these out as your child writes.

Teaching tips

  • Start at the top. Most letters begin at the top and go down. Starting in the right place makes handwriting faster and neater later on.
  • Grip matters more than neatness. A relaxed tripod grip (thumb, index and middle finger) is worth getting right early. Chunky pencils or crayons help small hands.
  • Big before small. Let young children trace letters in sand, with a finger, or on a whiteboard before using pencil and paper.
  • Little and often. Five minutes a day is plenty for preschoolers. Stop before hands get tired.
  • Names first. Children are most motivated to write their own name. Use "My own words" to make a name-tracing sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a name tracing worksheet?
Yes. Choose "My own words" and type your child’s name. You can add up to 20 words, separated by commas.
What style of letters is used?
Simple print letters made of straight lines and circles, sometimes called ball-and-stick. This is the style most schools teach first.
At what age should children start tracing letters?
Many children enjoy tracing from around age 3 or 4. Watch for interest and hand strength rather than a specific age.
Why is there no answer key?
Tracing sheets don’t need one. Check that each letter starts in the right place and sits on the correct lines.
