How to use this number tracing maker

Choose the numbers to practice. Start with 0 to 4, then 5 to 9, then the full set. Pick Mixed up order once children know the shapes, so they practice recognizing each number rather than following a pattern.

Each row has a solid model number followed by dotted numbers to trace. The blank line after each row is for writing the number without help.

Teaching tips

  • Say it as you write it. Saying the number’s name while tracing links the shape to the word and the amount.
  • Count objects too. After tracing 5, count out five buttons or blocks. Writing a numeral means most when children know how many it stands for.
  • Watch for reversals. Writing 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 backwards is very common and usually fades with practice. Gently point to the model at the start of the row.
  • Use rhymes. Short rhymes such as "down and around, 5 wears a hat" help children remember how each number is formed.

What comes next?

Once children can write 0 to 9, move on to counting and simple addition. Our addition worksheets with numbers 0 to 5 are a gentle next step.

Frequently asked questions

My child writes some numbers backwards. Is that normal?
Yes. Reversals are very common in preschool and kindergarten and usually disappear with practice and time.
Can I practice just one number?
Yes. Set "From" and "To" to the same number for a full page of that number.
How long should a tracing session last?
For young children, five to ten minutes is plenty. Stop while it’s still fun.
Should my child trace or copy first?
Trace first. Tracing the dotted numbers teaches the direction and order of each stroke. Once a number feels easy, move to the blank line and let your child copy it from the model at the start of the row, then try writing it from memory.
What paper and pencil work best?
Any printer paper works. For small hands, a short chunky pencil or a triangular crayon encourages a comfortable grip, and printing on Letter or A4 keeps the lines a good size for beginners.
