What kindergarteners work on
Kindergarten is when letters and numbers move from recognizing to writing, and when counting turns into first addition. Children this age do best with one skill per sheet and about ten minutes of practice.
A sensible order
- Finish the alphabet. Move from uppercase to lowercase with the letter tracing maker, then try letter pairs (Aa, Bb) so children connect the two forms.
- Write numbers from memory. Use number tracing with the blank practice row switched on, so children trace first and then write on their own.
- Add within 10. Set the addition maker to sums to 10 and ten problems. Let children use fingers or counters. That is how the facts are learned, not a habit to stop.
When the facts start to stick
Once sums within 10 feel comfortable on paper, the Addition Speed Challenge turns the same facts into a one-minute game. Treat the score as something to beat next time, not a test.
