What Grade 3 practice covers

Third grade is the times-table year. Children are expected to know the facts to 10 Γ— 10 or 12 Γ— 12, use them for division, and read a clock to the minute. Regular short practice matters more this year than any other.

Choosing the right settings

  • Multiplication: practice one or two tables at a time in the multiplication maker until they’re quick, then mix them. Leave the 6, 7 and 8 tables until the easier ones are secure.
  • Division: every problem in the division maker comes from a times-table fact, so there are no remainders. Practice division for a table right after multiplying by it.
  • Telling time: set the clock worksheets to one-minute times.
  • Spelling: lists get longer this year. The scrambled-word section of the spelling maker is good for tricky patterns.

Building speed without pressure

Use Math Flashcards for the handful of facts that keep slipping: missed cards come back for another try. Print an answer key and let children mark their own sheets, so they see their mistakes straight away.
